Week 17 Progress - Orc Invasions

Orc invasions are working! At least, the basics are. It was another short week for me, due to having to fly out of the state for a few days, but I'm happy with everything I got done. Lets review:

Week 17

Firstly, I finished three orc models by hacking apart different asset packages and piecing together the armor, re-texturing certain things, and putting together all the details necessary to make the prefabs in Unity.

Orc Warrior:

Orc Bloodletter:

Orc Ravager:

Spawning & Invasions:

Next I got them all to spawn in one of the four corners (randomly selected) on the map, and then chase down the King, until they die, or until the King dies. Noe that none of the detail work is done for the outside. I plan to add grass, bushes, trees, and more ground textures to the map generator at a later date (it simply isn't that important at the moment).

Combat Improvements and First Battle:

Now that we have some actual combat going, I needed to make some improvements to the AI in regards to target selection, pathing, and how to swap targets after your current target has been defeated. Now, there's less pushing/shoving and units collide and engage in battle fairly smoothly. Note that none of the units (dwarfs or orcs) have their unit stats adjusted yet. I'll be doing some light balancing next week.

UI for Invasions and Warnings:

Lastly, I added some UI elements to give the player information about upcoming/current invasions. Before an invasion starts, you're given 3 warnings at 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days before the invasion (similar to Caesar 3). Then, when the invasion is active, it shows you how many orcs are invading (with a number that reduces as you kill orcs). Then, finally, when the orc invasion is defeated, the invasion element is cleared.

What's Left To Do:

Audio. There's no audio for any of the combat, and it feels really weird. So, that's one of my top priorities. Also, there's no particle effects, like armor hits or blood splashes. Lastly, bodies don't get cleaned up, and stay indefinitely (which is a problem). So, all of that will get addressed soon.

Next Week

Traps! Orc invasions aren't that fun if you cant watch orcs walk through all your traps before they get to your soldiers. So, in addition to audio, i'll be working on a variety of trap rooms. My goal is to make trap rooms fairly modular to allow for a high degree of customization.

Please check out the latest build (version 1.0.3) and leave some feedback on what you think. I'm really trying to get some early feedback on this game and incorporate feedback into my design decisions. Thank you for reading this post and checking out the game!
